Studies in Health and Physical Education, at the Junior School level, primarily focus on movement and physical activity. Through the introduction and mastery of the fundamental motor skills (running, throwing, catching, striking etc), the children learn the key movement patterns that are pre-requisites to the learning of sport specific skills. Social skills are developed by participation in group and team activities, encouraging cooperation, problem solving and decision making behaviour. At each year level, students build on their current knowledge, skills and understanding and form a basis for future learning.
Students begin to recognise the relationship between physical education and health, and describe their feelings associated with involvement in physical activity. Health Knowledge and Promotion topics, including safety, food and nutrition, human development and human relations are explored.
The Physical Education Program is taught indoors and outdoors and in aquatic environments. Students gain an introduction to athletics, ball handling, fitness education, gymnastics, dance, games, sport and aquatics.
