Catering for children with Special Needs
Each student is an individual, with particular concerns and needs. A small number of students experience learning difficulties or have a disability or impairment, which may affect their schooling. It is important that any known problems are discussed openly at the enrolment interview so that a clear understanding about how the College may be able to assist the student can be reached.
A Program Support group will be established for each student with special needs. This group, comprising parents, teachers and any relevant educational support providers, will meet on a regular basis to review the student's needs in a mainstream classroom setting.
In Years Prep and One, extra classroom support, with a focus on literacy, is provided on a part-time basis by Special Education teachers. In Year One, a Reading Recovery program is available to a small number of students who meet the criteria for eligibility.
Individualised sessions with a Special Education teacher (usually a half-hour or one hour per week) are available to Junior and Middle School students on a user-pays basis at each campus. Students at any year level who meet the Commonwealth and /or State eligibility criteria for Special Education funding may be able to access a limited amount of assistance from an integration aide each week, and/or support from an educational support provider such as a speech therapist.
