Junior School Curriculum

The Junior School caters for students in the early years of school, from Prep to Year 4. The Junior School provides a nurturing and caring environment in which children develop socially, emotionally, intellectually and spiritually.

Junior School teachers provide a varied and stimulating educational program, that fosters students' intellectual and emotional development. Junior School endeavours to create a love of learning and the independence skills and initiatives to carry them through life.
Literacy and numeracy are the major focuses of the Early Years. Each morning is designated for the acquisition of these skills.

Early intervention is an integral part of the Prep - 3 programs, in which students experiencing difficulty are given the extra support they require to master literacy and numeracy. Reading Recovery forms part of the Early Intervention program at Year 1.  In addition an extension and enrichment program supports children with special abilities.

Integrated Studies incorporates Science, Studies of Society and Environment, Health and Technology. During students time in Junior School they explore a broad range of topics that develop their knowledge of the world around them and their role as a member of society.

Specialist subjects in Junior School are:

  • Physical Education
  • Music
  • Art
  • Library
  • Perceptual Motor Program - Prep & Year 1
  • Indonesian - Years 3 & 4
The partnership between home and school is recognised with parents being involved in many aspects of the Junior School program.
The use of computers is incorporated into the overall Junior School program.

At Overnewton we believe that learning should be fun and there are numerous dress-up days, special events, performances and excursions to enrich the curriculum.

Our aim is to develop self-disciplined students confident in themselves as learners, respectful of others, community minded with an ongoing desire and love of learning.
