Cross Curricular Learning (CCL)

The Study of Science, Technologies, Humanities and Health

Cross Curricular Learning (CCL) lays the foundations for students to build knowledge, skills and understandings within and across subject areas. CCL encourages students to make connections between learning areas and the world around them, which assists to foster deeper understandings and opportunities for creativity. They become explorers, investigators, gatherers and presenters of information in important subject areas such as Science, Technologies, Humanities, and Health, enabling them to think critically, hypothesise and problem solve. CCL allows our students with greater depth and creativity to see the relationships and links between their learning and the wider world.

Throughout the integrated approach of CCL, students delve deeper into important content taught through a guided inquiry approach, covering elements of both knowledge and skill development. Learning in CCL is generated through predicting, questioning, experimenting, collecting data, and evaluating results.

The subjects incorporated in CCL build throughout the Junior School with a sequential approach to the learning of important world topics, such as:

Science

Science Understanding, Science as a human endeavour, and Science Inquiry

  • Earth and Space Science
  • Physical Science
  • Biological Science
  • Chemical Science

Technologies

Design Technology and Digital Technology

  • Technologies and society
  • Generating and designing
  • Processes and production
  • Digital systems
  • Data representation

Humanities

The world around us.

  • History
  • Geography
  • Civics and Citizenship
  • Communities
  • Sustainability

Health

Personal, social and community health.

  • Identity
  • Change
  • Interacting with others
  • Making healthy choices

An Inquiry Approach

CCL is delivered through a guided inquiry approach. This model empowers students to learn independently through a process which mirrors real life thinking and learning.  Guided inquiry fosters creativity, deep thinking, and a strong sense of agency. As the students develop their inquiry skills, they navigate challenges and reflect on their understandings. The culmination of higher-order thinking and inquiry skills are emphasised in Year 4 with the 'Genius Hour Exhibition', where students proudly present their own student-led inquiry projects which demonstrate the confidence, curiosity, and independence developed throughout their CCL journey.

In Prep, the students study Units of Inquiry based on:

·   Health

·   Civics and Citizenship

·   History

·   Interpersonal Development, and

·   Science, which includes Earth and Biological Science

CCL Comes Alive

As you can see in the short video below how, through the 'Genius Hour Exhibition', our Year 4 students explore topics of personal interest related to technological practices, highlighting the impressive depth of learning and engagement from all involved.
