Performing Arts

The Junior School Performing Arts program offers a dynamic introduction to Dance, Drama and Music. Through an integrated and sequential approach, students build essential skills in creativity, confidence and collaboration. Each discipline is taught through playful, engaging experiences that encourage self-expression and nurture a strong sense of identity and belonging.

Instrumental Music and Suzuki Strings

Alongside classroom learning, students can take part in our Instrumental Program, with individual lessons (through private instrumental tuition) offered in piano, guitar, drums, violin, viola, cello and more. In Year 1, students may also join our Suzuki Strings program – a unique and joyful introduction to string instruments. As students progress through the College more options become available, including the opportunity to learn wind and brass instruments such as flute, clarinet, trumpet and saxophone, as well as private singing lessons with our exceptional team of experienced music educators. Individual lessons are offered before, during or after school.

Learning Through Movement, Music and Play

Students participate in three 50-minute Performing Arts lessons each fortnight, where they sing, dance, act and play their way through musical concepts and dramatic expression. These joyful and energetic lessons are led by specialist Performing Arts teachers who are trained musicians and performers, bringing expert knowledge and passion to every class. Lessons often feel like games, allowing children to explore rhythm, melody, gesture and storytelling in a way that is both fun and developmentally appropriate. Students practise reading and playing music, using facial expressions and movement to show emotion, and working in groups to solve creative challenges.

Why Performing Arts Matters

Research shows that learning and practising an instrument has a powerful impact on cognitive development and academic success. Playing music strengthens communication between the brain’s left and right hemispheres, boosting fine motor skills, memory, verbal reasoning, vocabulary and problem-solving abilities. At Overnewton, we see these benefits every day and we encourage all students to become involved in the vibrant and inspiring world of Performing Arts.

Performance, Ensemble and Community Connection

Overnewton students are encouraged to share their talents through performances at College events, assemblies, and special occasions. From Year 1, students can join a choir, and many choose to participate in ensembles such as the Stringlings (for beginner strings), the Canowindra Junior Strings or the Orfestra. These ensembles not only develop musical skills but also foster friendships across year levels and build a sense of teamwork and pride. Musical performances are highlighted each year through events such as the College Fair, Festival of Music, and our much-loved Carol Service at St Paul’s Cathedral, to name a few.
