Visual Arts

The Visual Arts program at Overnewton encourages Junior School students to explore their creativity and imagination through a wide range of artistic experiences. Prep students participate in three 50-minute lessons each fortnight, led by specialist Visual Arts teachers who are practising artists in their own right.

Appreciating Art and Expressing Identity

Throughout the program, students are introduced to Australian, Indigenous and international art, encouraging them to build an appreciation for artistic and cultural traditions. They also develop a shared art vocabulary, learning to reflect on and discuss their own work and that of others with assurance.

In a supportive and non-judgemental environment, students are encouraged to take creative risks and express their unique perspectives. Visual Arts plays an important role in developing fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness and working memory, all while nurturing critical thinking, curiosity and creative confidence.

Exploring Techniques, Materials and Ideas

Working independently and collaboratively, students experiment with materials such as drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, sculpture and clay. They create artworks inspired by their own experiences, cultural backgrounds, literature, and the world around them.
