A National Stage for Student Voice

Upper secondary school aged student from Overnewton's Senior School on a visit to Canberra, photographed standing beside Australia's Deputy Prime Minister of the day.

Year 12 student Etienne had the incredible opportunity to attend the 31st National Schools Constitutional Convention in Canberra, joining students from across Australia to explore how the Constitution works and how it might evolve.

During her time in Canberra, Etienne also met with parliamentarians, including Gorton MP Alice Jordan-Baird, Maribyrnong MP Jo Briskey, and Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, providing a valuable opportunity to engage with individuals who live what she studies.

The convention was a reminder of the importance of youth engagement and collaboration in shaping Australia’s future.

Through debates, workshops and keynote speakers, I gained a much clearer understanding of Section 53 and why it remains significant in modern Australian politics. Meeting students from across the country and engaging with local parliamentarians really broadened my thinking and inspired me.

We acknowledge and pay respect to the Marin Balluk people of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the Land on which Overnewton Anglican Community College stands. We respect the knowledge that will be forever embedded within the Aboriginal Custodianship of Country and remember the loss of cultures, languages and Lands they have endured. Like the Marin Balluk people, we at Overnewton want to respect the Land, the cultures and the heritages, and learn from those who have come before us in the passing on of knowledge and the teaching of life skills, as well as continue with wise stewardship of our buildings and grounds. We honour their custodianship of this Land and offer them our deep respect.
