Overnewton Students ‘Spring into Chinese’ at Monash University

Nov 7, 2025 3:44 AM

Students who will be studying Chinese at Senior School in 2026 recently took part in Spring into Chinese, an inspiring language and culture event hosted by Monash University.

Students heard from Monash professors and current students about the many pathways available through Chinese studies, including global opportunities and future-focused discussions on China’s evolving role in the world. They also explored historical perspectives on Chinese settlers and reflected on how the past shapes the present.

In interactive sessions, students put their language skills into practice with peers from other schools and joined a pronunciation workshop led by senior lecturer Hui Huang.

Today’s excursion at Monash University provided me with new ideas about how I could use my Chinese language beyond Overnewton. I didn’t know there were so many potential pathways and travel opportunities that I could pursue both in Australia and abroad.

Learning Chinese can help someone communicate with international businesses, especially companies that trade with or work in China. It can also create more job opportunities, as many employers value employees who speak more than one language.

We acknowledge and pay respect to the Marin Balluk people of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the Land on which Overnewton Anglican Community College stands. We respect the knowledge that will be forever embedded within the Aboriginal Custodianship of Country and remember the loss of cultures, languages and Lands they have endured. Like the Marin Balluk people, we at Overnewton want to respect the Land, the cultures and the heritages, and learn from those who have come before us in the passing on of knowledge and the teaching of life skills, as well as continue with wise stewardship of our buildings and grounds. We honour their custodianship of this Land and offer them our deep respect.
