Old Collegians in Focus | Nic Antoniou

Designing Connection: How Nic Antoniou is shaping communities through architecture and the values of an Overnewton education.

For Nic Antoniou (Class of 2005), his 13 years at Overnewton Anglican Community College were more than an education – they were the foundation of a lifelong commitment to community, learning, excellence and respect.

From the camaraderie of ACS Sport and Performing Arts to the quieter, everyday moments between classes, Nic reflects on a school experience that shaped both his character and his ambition. “A determination to represent myself in the best way possible is what I take away most,” he says – a mindset that continues to define his professional journey.

Nic’s path into architecture emerged during his school years, where his strengths in both creative and analytical subjects were recognised and nurtured. A Year 9 work experience placement confirmed his interest, while Melbourne’s evolving cityscape – particularly Federation Square – sparked a deeper curiosity about the power of design to shape the human experience. Years later, in a fitting full-circle moment, Nic was admitted as a Registered Architect at Federation Square itself.

This philosophy is deeply aligned with the College values. Nic’s commitment to community is evident in his emphasis on shared spaces and social interaction. His dedication to learning is reflected in his ongoing engagement with global design trends and ideas, influenced by time spent studying innovative housing models across Europe. His pursuit of excellence is seen in the calibre and ambition of his projects, while respect underpins his collaborative leadership style and approach to design – considering not only clients and colleagues, but also the broader social and environmental context.

Nic’s journey has not been without challenge. Entering the workforce during the Global Financial Crisis, he faced early setbacks before securing an opportunity with Plus Studio – an experience that shaped his belief in persistence: “The grass isn’t greener on the other side, it’s greener where you water it.”

Today as a leader in his field, Nic continues to embody the College’s “Over & Above” ethos – demonstrating that success is built not just on talent, but on resilience, inquisitiveness, and a genuine desire to contribute to the community.

His advice to current students is simple yet powerful: The best answer comes from asking the right question, stay curious, and seek to understand the world around you.

We acknowledge and pay respect to the Marin Balluk people of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the Land on which Overnewton Anglican Community College stands. We respect the knowledge that will be forever embedded within the Aboriginal Custodianship of Country and remember the loss of cultures, languages and Lands they have endured. Like the Marin Balluk people, we at Overnewton want to respect the Land, the cultures and the heritages, and learn from those who have come before us in the passing on of knowledge and the teaching of life skills, as well as continue with wise stewardship of our buildings and grounds. We honour their custodianship of this Land and offer them our deep respect.
