Mathematics
Mathematics is a powerful tool that helps students make sense of the world around them. It fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and empowers students to become confident, numerate citizens.
At Overnewton, we place strong emphasis on number skills from the very beginning of each student's learning journey. In Prep, students begin by exploring mathematical concepts through hands-on experiences using concrete materials. This approach helps them to build a deep understanding of how Mathematics works, before moving on to recording and applying what they have learned.
A Singapore Mathematics Approach
Our Junior School teachers have drawn inspiration from the highly-regarded Singapore Mathematics approach, known for its effectiveness in developing strong mathematical thinkers. Rather than focusing on memorisation, this method encourages students to truly understand mathematical concepts. Students move through a structured sequence - first exploring with physical objects, then representing ideas pictorially, and finally working with abstract symbols and written equations.
Mathematics in Everyday Moments
Our Prep teachers focus on creating meaningful opportunities for their students to apply Mathematics in real-world contexts, helping them transfer their knowledge to a range of everyday situations.
At home, you can support your child’s growth in Mathematics by counting together, singing number songs, measuring ingredients while cooking, spotting numbers in your local area, or sorting everyday items into categories. Maths is all around us and these small moments help to build a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
