A Spectacular Start to Our China Tour

Dec 8, 2025 1:02 AM

The first stop on our China Tour was Shangao School and the experience was nothing short of magnificent. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with extraordinary warmth, and our students gained so much from the genuine connections formed. These opportunities were made possible through the leadership of our College Head of Languages, Sunny Huang, whose work was instrumental in bringing this experience to life. Overnewton is deeply grateful for her dedication in coordinating such a memorable chapter of the tour.

Our visit was planned to meticulous detail and we couldn’t help but feel humbled and awed by a welcome of the highest honour. We were greeted by 50 student performers and school dignitaries, and after marvelling in their costumes and performance skills, we joined in a traditional dance. After grand tour meeting students of all ages, we transitioned to the Senior High School and took part in a whole school line dancing session and commenced our formal classes for the day. These included an English class observation, Chinese calligraphy, mask decorating and fan making.

The afternoon featured a youth dialogue forum where students explored the similarities and differences between Australian and Chinese school life through a bilingual guided session. It was heartening to see students and adults connect so naturally, and to witness the pride with which our hosts shared insights into their daily lives. Friendships were formed, gifts exchanged and lasting memories made. It was truly fascinating to gain a deeper understanding of school life in China and to see how highly regarded visitors from Australia are.

We acknowledge and pay respect to the Marin Balluk people of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the Land on which Overnewton Anglican Community College stands. We respect the knowledge that will be forever embedded within the Aboriginal Custodianship of Country and remember the loss of cultures, languages and Lands they have endured. Like the Marin Balluk people, we at Overnewton want to respect the Land, the cultures and the heritages, and learn from those who have come before us in the passing on of knowledge and the teaching of life skills, as well as continue with wise stewardship of our buildings and grounds. We honour their custodianship of this Land and offer them our deep respect.
