Overnewton Chess Team Claims 2nd in Closest ACS Championship Finish Ever
Congratulations to our ACS Chess team on achieving an outstanding 2nd place finish at the ACS Chess Championship in what was the closest result in ACS Chess history!
In an extraordinary day of competition, just 1.5 points separated Overnewton from the eventual champions, while only 2.5 points covered 1st through to 5th place, highlighting the exceptional standard of play across the tournament.
This achievement reflects the dedication, preparation and commitment shown by our students throughout the season. In the lead up to the Championship, the team consistently attended before school training sessions, demonstrating a strong willingness to refine their skills and prepare thoroughly together.
Across the day, Overnewton’s players competed with composure, strategic thinking and resilience, while displaying excellent sportsmanship and support for one another throughout the tournament. Their ability to remain focused under pressure and represent the College so positively was particularly pleasing to see.
Finishing 2nd overall in such a closely contested Championship is a result the entire team and College community should be incredibly proud of.

We acknowledge and pay respect to the Marin Balluk people of the Kulin Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the Land on which Overnewton Anglican Community College stands. We respect the knowledge that will be forever embedded within the Aboriginal Custodianship of Country and remember the loss of cultures, languages and Lands they have endured. Like the Marin Balluk people, we at Overnewton want to respect the Land, the cultures and the heritages, and learn from those who have come before us in the passing on of knowledge and the teaching of life skills, as well as continue with wise stewardship of our buildings and grounds. We honour their custodianship of this Land and offer them our deep respect.
