Student Wellbeing
Safe, Supported and Empowered
At Overnewton, each student's wellbeing is central to everything we do. Through safe relationships, restorative practices and a supportive environment, our students are empowered to grow in confidence, empathy and resilience from the very beginning of their school journey.
At Overnewton, we know a safe and supportive environment is essential for each student's growth and success. Research shows that when children feel connected and valued at school, they’re more engaged in their learning and achieve stronger academic outcomes. That’s why wellbeing and pastoral care are embedded in every stage of learning at Overnewton.

Wellbeing at Middle School
The middle years are full of change and opportunity. At Overnewton, Middle School is designed to support students through this exciting stage where they are growing, learning and discovering more about themselves than ever before. Our classes are challenging and engaging, giving students the chance to dive deeper into their learning while exploring different ways of thinking and creating.
We know students do their best when they feel happy, safe and connected. That’s why we focus on building strong relationships, encouraging students to set high goals, and giving them real opportunities to learn in meaningful ways. They will be supported to take on new challenges and celebrate their achievements along the way.
Respect, honesty, compassion and fairness are values we live by every day in the Middle School. If problems arise, our Restorative Practices help students work through issues with understanding, responsibility and empathy. It’s all about creating a safe and inclusive community where everyone belongs.
You will also hear a lot about the Fundamental Five and Follow Up Five, which are the guiding principles of Middle School life.
The Fundamental Five
The Fundamental Five sets out clear, positive expectations for how we learn and work together.

Follow Up Five
The Follow Up Five is there to support students if they need extra guidance.

In Middle School, you’ll be encouraged to aim high, supported to grow, and inspired to make the most of every opportunity.
Leadership, Wellbeing and Connection
In Middle School, every student has the chance to grow as a leader. We encourage students to support others, take initiative, and show leadership in everyday life. Whether through formal roles or day-to-day actions, these opportunities help students build confidence, character and respect for diverse communities.
Home Group teachers plays a key role in each student's journey. They are there to check in with students each day, guide learning, and support wellbeing. They help set a positive tone in the classroom and work closely with families to make sure students feel safe, supported and ready to learn.
Wellbeing is at the heart of Middle School. Our Pastoral Care program combines the Victorian Government's Respectful Relationships, Rights and Resilience curriculum with age-appropriate workshops on health, identity, stress management, and relationships. Students will learn how to build resilience, manage challenges, and make positive choices for your future.
We also take time to reflect on important days like Reconciliation Day, International Women’s Day, Harmony Week, IDAHOBIT, NAIDOC Week and R U OK? Day. These events are opportunities to celebrate diversity, promote respect, and strengthen our community.
Most importantly, we know that strong connections make all the difference. At Overnewton, students, families and teachers work together in an environment of trust and care. These relationships ensure that your learning and wellbeing are always at the centre of Middle School life.
